Have a Merry Christmas everyone! I am living on a trip to visit relatives. I'll be back around Tuesday, depending on Michigan snow storms.

I just finished a book called Stop Living Life Like An Emergency, by Diane Sieg, R.N. I have seen many coaching clients that do live life like an emergency. 7 warning signs she writes about are:

1. Always running a little late

2. Piles everywhere that you hope to get to someday

3. You find yourself in 3 modes: hurry up, catch up or fed up

4. You constantly lose things or forget things

5. You have no patience for traffic, grocery lines or anything else that takes too long

6. You pride yourself on how much you get done and how fast you do it.

7. You frequently say things lik, "When things slow down I will...exercise...get more sleep...take better care of myself.

If you are living life like an emergency you may have one of these personality types:
The controller - no one but you can do it right
The perfectionist
The driver - impossibly high standards
The action person - never wants to sit on the sidelines and watch, always is do, do, do
The adrenaline junkie - thrives on activity, chaos and crisis often of their own making
The risk taker - always chooses risk over stability
The impatient
The rescuer - always the first to volunteer to save the day
The difference maker - has to feel need and helps others at any cost

Do any of these sound like you? The personality traits aren't bad, they can be very successful. It's just if you cross the line to the extreme that emergency living develops.

Emergency living becomes a habit. A person can be rushing so long, they have forgotten they have a choice.

The book has the solutions to emergency living. Things like slowing down and being ruthless with your schedule and listening to your limits.

I found this great article for those of you who are thinking of starting or are in your own business: Designing a Creative Business.

I am working on creating an even more nourishing workspace. I already have a dream board up helping me plan, holding a picture by Kerri Smith on being a superhero, a list of my goals, and of relaxing things to do. I want to get rid of some paper piles that accumulated over the Christmas season. I'd like to get some nature in here in the form of a fountain or a plant.

I also love her idea of listing your favorite things to do and incorporating them into your work. I am already able to do that with photography that I can post to my blog, writing for articles and programs, designing for my website, the calendar, some upcoming programs. I am going to think of what else I can incorporate.

How is your work, working for you?

Once again I am taking clients for a program to plan the coming year. This year's is called "Create a Year of Joy" program: http://www.encouragingcoach.com/programs-create.htm

Last year I had so much fun helping clients discover what they really wanted in the coming year. This year, I made the program a little more structured and made some worksheets to help with the specific planning.

It's going to be one a first come-first served basis, since I have limited openings. However I'm not going to be announcing it in the newsletter till the beginning of January. So my loyal Blogger reader get a head start :)

Saturday, we managed to stay in most of the day. My son had a birthday party from 2-4 to attend so we stuck near by. It turned out to be a good day for one on one time. Jonathan and I played four games of Yahtzee at his request. Then while he was at the party, Brea and I wrapped presents - one of her favorite things to do. I also finished up some cards that I wanted to send out.

This is the first fall in 7 years I wasn't busy on Saturdays with my son's soccer and Brea's dance or gymnastics. We chose to take a season off from classes and recreation. Weekends have been a lot less hectic. Season is almost up though. We will be cocooning less in the new year.

It's coming to the point where I know I am not going to be able to do everything I wanted to for Christmas. I don't want to be pushed totally beyond my limits. I want to enjoy the holiday, have time for contemplation and not be a grump to be around. So I am checking my list, and crossing things out. Where is your limit?

Monday was a snow day. No school due to a snow storm. Lots of blowing snow. So we stayed indoors with our hot cocoa. The kids and I finished our baking day. We made a gingerbread house for the first time:

We also finished up the cookies, played a game, watched a movie and did some things on the computer.

Today was our Christmas Baking Day. After church, we stopped by the grocery store to pick out special cookie toppings. My son wanted the green cornflake and marshamallow holly wreaths. My daughter wanted the sugar cookie cut outs. She has an artistic flair and takes a long time to decorate each cookie. We are finishing up on Monday. We also have a gingerbread house to complete.

We are in the busiest month of the year. Have you been taking time out to relax? After a busy Saturday of errands, Christmas shopping and visiting relatives it was time to relax for me. I filled my foot massager with water and foot soak. Got a glass of wine. Laid out one small, exquisite piece of dark chocolate. Then the kids and I watched a Christmas Carol that I had taped earlier, while I soaked my feet, sipped wine and nibbled chocolate. I slept well and woke up refreshed.

It was delicious!

The kids and I also cleaned out the fridge really well, washing down the shelves and making it beautiful to look at when we open it.

I found this wonderful quote at Kerri Smith's blog

"Life moves on, whether we act as cowards or heroes. Life has no other discipline to impose, if we would but realize it, than to accept life unquestioningly. Everything we shut our eyes to, everything we run away from, everything we deny, denigrate or despise, serves to defeat us in the end. What seems nasty, painful, evil, can become a source of beauty, joy and strength, if faced with an open mind. Every moment is a golden one for him(/her) who has the vision to recognize it as such." -Henry Miller

In this month's Health Magazine there was an article on what is the minimum you can do healthwise when you don't have as much time during the holiday season.

For Sleep The ideal is to be able to wake without an alarm. The minumum is to avoid going consecutive nights without enough sleep

For Exercise The ideal is to fit in an hour of cardio most days and 2-3 strength training sessions a week. The minimum is 30 min of cardio a day, in 10 minute bouts if necessary. And one day of strength training.

Fruits and Vegetables Ideally we should eat 7 servings a day. Minimum would be 1 serving with every meal.

Dairy Products Ideally we should eat 3 servings a day. At minimum we would eat 1 serving.

Stress The real ideal would be to do yoga or other stress relieving technique. Must do at least one thing to nurture yourself daily. Even just a 5 minutes tea break.

I have been reading a really fascinating books called, "Making Peace with the Things in Your Life," by Cindy Glovinsky. I haven't really heard her approach before. She talks about the balance of order and chaos. How if there is too much order, you stifle your creativity and have to break out. But, once you allow chaos too much reign you become overwhelmed and unproductive. She writes, "Many of the difficulties that we have with Things arise from a perspective that demonized chaos and idealizes order. This sets us up for failure and, worse yet, shame about failure." A life with no chaos is a life of no growth or fun.

A perceptive illustration is in regards to gardens. We don't want a garden with complicated shapes and nothing out of place. We would be afraid to move. But, we also don't want a garden overrun with weeds and brambles. Instead a better goal would be an English country garden, nature roaming, but within reason. "nurture never forces."

"Perfect order is both less feasible and less satisfying thatn sensibly and creatively contained chaos."

Another difficulty in creating order is shame. When you start working on a pile, do you start picking up and putting away or do you mutter to yourself, "I can't believe I let it get this bad" "I should have cleaned this a month ago" "This is horrible, a nightmare." Or do you turn to blame.

She writes about certain negative thinking patterns involving the clutter that needs to stop if you are going to solve your problems.
1. Should statements "I should clean this floor on my hands and knees"
2. All or nothing thinking "If I can't clean the whole fridge why bother with one shelf." "The closet isn't organized perfectly. It's a mess."
3. Mind reading - they may not be thinking what you think they are thinking
4. Discounting the positive - only noticing the one pile in a clean room
5. Personalizaion - blaming yourself
6. Blaming others
7. Labeling "sloppy" "pig" "walking disaster"
8. Horriblizing - saying things like "horrible", "awful", "disgusting", "terrible", "hideous". "a nightmare", "a disaster zone", "I'll never be able to..."

It's time to "Do what you can."
